As Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Shows Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, noticed loud noises reverberating around the community.
“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.
As she stood on the road, speaking to a duo who had run up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting into something that surely every instinct would instruct you to move in the other direction.
“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”
A Powerful Moment of Courage During Chaos
The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.
Community Response and Assistance
Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility beside the location of the incident serving as a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as going into the surf to rescue people needing help.
After the events, statements of support were shared. A social media message expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.
The team of lifeguards later shared a message, noting they were “processing what transpired”.
“Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the compassion directed at our team,” the organization commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those impacted.”
Official Praise
Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the instant the incident commenced right into late that night.
“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a local official.
“The team show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.
“As we grieve and process the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much good we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
