On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is directly connected to achieving success.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

Arteta assumed control on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. However, that early success is still his only major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met immediately following his role was made public.

League Position and Pressure

With trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises notwithstanding Arteta presiding over a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

Arteta currently has 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, commending the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the squad's dedication as paramount. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team approaches the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
